Tom Netzel Announces Retirement after 48 Years

Tom Netzel has directed the Sacred Heart Choir and played the piano and organ for the last 48 years. After next weekend, Tom will retire from his position at the parish. His musical talent and dedication are greatly appreciated.

A reception in his honor will be held in McCann Center on Saturday, June 15th after the 5:30 p.m. Mass.

All parishioners are invited to come and express their appreciation to Tom and his wife, Kathy.

Year of Faith Celebration: Bishop Amos will be here June 23rd

Year of Faith Celebration

Mark your calendars for a special celebration here at 3:00 on Sunday, June 23. Bishop Amos will be here to preside at a deanery-wide observance of the Year of Faith. The entire deanery is invited to Vespers evening prayer) at 3 pm. The bishop will preach briefly during the vespers, and give an extended presentation, including questions and answers, at the end of vespers. Refreshments will

follow the service.

Annual Youth Service Retreat: Registration Deadline is June 10th

CATHOLICS IN ACTION, is the Diocese of Davenport’s annual youth service retreat. It will be held June 30 – July 2. Each year, 80 to 100 youth from across the diocese come together for three days of prayer, learning, service and fun. Youth are eligible to participate after completing 8th grade. The deadline for us to register a team is June 10th so let me know as soon as possible if your are interested in participating. A parish team consists of 3-6 youth and an adult leader. This event is a Deanery-wide event for youth completing 7 or 8th grade. It’s one night in a tent at Red Rock and an afternoon of canoeing. A great way to meet Catholic kids from other parishes and build confidence doing something fun! The poor of Berlin El Salvador thank all of you for your continued and generous support for the very beneficial medical, dental and optical aid they received. With your help, over 1325 people were served; many receiving care in all 3 areas. They are a people of great poverty but also of great faith. They see your efforts as gifts from God. And, indeed, that’s what they are. Thank you for being Jesus’ hands on this earth.

With great joy we receive the news that the Cardinal-electors have selected a new Bishop of Rome, Supreme Pontiff, and Pastor of the Universal Church, His Holiness, Francis. (Note: The Vatican news service has clarified that he is “Francis,” not “Francis I.” An additional clarification notes that his name was selected in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.) He is the first Jesuit to become pope. He had been serving as the Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina. May the Lord richly bless his ministry to the Church and the People of God.
