Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In our Gospel this Sunday we hear about the multiplication of the loaves and fishes – a familiar Gospel to our ears. Let’s reflect briefly on the central part of this passage:

Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over— twelve wicker baskets full.

There are many different ways to view this passage. We can see it for the miracle it is – God providing for His people through Jesus, our Savior; but we also might see it as a challenge. I believe Jesus wants to do with us what he did to the loaves, that is, he desires to take us, bless us, break us and distribute us. That, in a nutshell, is what discipleship is all about. We are not merely passive receivers of grace and holiness. We are called to trust in God who desires to use whatever we have, no matter how small or insignificant, and use it for the good of others and the glory of God. Since we hold tightly to our valued gifts and talents, there is a “breaking” that must occur after the blessing. Often, we must allow ourselves to run the risk of defeat and brokenness, trusting in God, letting go of selfishness, so that we can be used for others.

I would ask that we pray this weekend for the repose of the soul of Kelsie Auffert and for her husband, Brett and his daughters Aubrie and Lexie along with the other members of the Auffert and Lambert families who mourn Kelsie’s death. There will be a private, invitation only, funeral here Monday at 11:00 AM, thus there will be no Mass this Monday. May Kelsie rest in the eternal peace of God’s kingdom.
